This is what I love about this machine. I have a meeting Saturday with owners of a local ish micro brewery. They are putting up a new building, and reached out for beer flights, tap handles, cutting boards, and some bigger furniture. For the smaller stuff I can bring samples with me for them to see instead of just pictures. And who doesn't Iike free stuff, especially with your logo on it!! I love not having to outsource this stuff any more!!!!

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is laser engraving? How does a laser engraver work?

Laser engraving is a form of pyrography, or "wood burning" - with greater precision and flexibility in materials that can be engraved.

Laser engravers work by using a high-intensity light beam to "burn" the material, producing designs on the material by burning or reacting with the material.

Laser engravers utilize various software to "translate" the desired design into machine code, which is then sent to the machine.

  • What is a laser engraving machine used for?

Laser engravers can be used for several project types - photo engraving, sign making, plaques, personalization of items, advertising,...almost anything your imagination will support!

  • Is laser engraving permanent?

Yes! Laser engraving physically burns the material, leaving a permanent marking on the material. The burn depth is controlled by adjusting the speed and power of the laser.

  • What materials should not be laser engraved?

Several materials should NEVER be laser engraved or cut:

    • Many plastics - Do not engrave but simply melt
    • PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride) / Vinyl / Pleather / Artificial leather - Emits chlorine gas when cut, ruins the optics and the machine's motion control system
    • Polycarbonate/Lexan - Catches fire ABS - Emits cyanide gas and tends to melt
    • HDPE/milk bottle plastic - Catches fire and melts
    • Polystyrene/PolyPropylene Foam - Catches fire
    • Fiberglass - Emits fumes Coated Carbon Fiber - Emits noxious fumes
  • Can a laser engraver cut wood?

Yes, depending on laser output power.

Our 6550 using 7W, 10W or 20W optical lasers can cut thin woods.

Our CO2 lasers can cut at higher speeds and also utilize an air assist system

Depending on wood thickness, multiple passes may be required for cutting.

  • What wood is suitable for laser engraving or cutting?

All woods can be engraved and cut; however, better results can be achieved with softer woods such as birch, basswood, and balsa.

For engraving photos, text, and other such designs, wood with "open" grains or light grain patterns is used. Wood with significant grain will cause uneven burning.

  • Can a laser engraver engrave metal?

Diode lasers can engrave on coated non-ferrous metals only, removing the coating from the underlying metal. To engrave on most common metals, a Fiber laser is required.

  • How to laser engraver tumblers?

Engraving tumblers will require the use of a rotary accessory - we recommend either the 4th Axis Rotary Module (pencils, tumblers) or the Multi-Purpose Rotary Attachment (tumblers, fragile items like wine glasses or vases).

This will allow the tumbler to rotate beneath the laser, engraving the design on the curved surface.

  • Can you make money with a laser engraver?

Yes! Many of our customers have started successful businesses with their laser engravers.

Your laser engraver can be used to make custom signs, photo plaques, jewelry, and more. Check out our Reviews page for examples of customer projects.

  • What is the difference between a laser engraver and a CNC router?

While there are many similarities, laser engravers and routers have some significant differences.

A CNC router will have a motorized Z axis and a spindle motor for operating router bits.

A laser engraver will typically not have a motorized Z axis and is not capable of operating a spindle motor or using router bits.

Please note that many of our CNC router machines do have the capability to mount a diode laser module, allowing the machine to serve multiple purposes.

  • What do I need to know before buying a laser engraver?

The most critical factor in purchasing a laser engraver is your intended usage. There are many power levels available in laser engravers, so you will want to ensure that your machine can engrave on the materials you wish to work with efficiently. Lower power lasers may not be capable of engraving on all surfaces, so we advise planning for future growth, as we're sure you will enjoy your laser engraver and want to move on to larger projects.

Another critical factor in purchasing is the post-sales support offered - YoraHome provides multiple support options for our customers, and we want to ensure that you are successful with your new machine. Beware of sellers that don't offer support beyond an email "black hole"!
